New Faces: Economics Welcomes Mitsuru Igami

The Department of Economics is pleased to welcome newly appointed Associate Professor Mitsuru (Michi) Igami. Professor Igami comes to the University of Toronto from Yale where he has been since 2012. He has served terms as a visiting professor at Stanford, MIT, and UBC.

His reasons for choosing the University of Toronto are rooted in the opportunities available here.

“Because it is simply the best place on the planet to do my kind of research! Newly appointed Assistant Professor Joao Ritto

Macroeconomist Joao Ritto joined the Department of Economics on July 1, 2024. The newly appointed assistant professor recently completed his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania where he developed research interests in monetary economics, consumption, and wealth inequality. His current working papers concern the real-world implications of monetary policy on inflation, consumption, investment, and employment.

Having spent years as a teaching assistant, Professor Ritto has gained experience leading tutorials in introductory undergraduate micro and macroeconomics. [Read more…]

Professors Baker and Stewart Appointed to Associate Chair Positions

Professor Michael Baker, Associate Chair Undergraduate Programs

On July 1, 2024, Professors Colin Steward and Michael Baker will assume the positions of Associate Chair of Graduate Programs and Associate Chair of Undergraduate Programs, respectively.

In-coming Associate Chair of Undergraduate Programs, Professor Baker also serves as Canada Research Chair in Economics and Public Policy. He and his colleagues recently won the Douglas Purvis Memorial Prize for their examination of how the introduction of the Canada Child Benefit has affected rates of child poverty. He is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Professor Baker earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto, his M.A. from York University and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

Ruhani Walia’s Undergraduate Adventure at the CEA’s Annual Meeting

The Bank of Canada and the Canadian Economics Association (CEA) are two of the strongest forces shaping economic policy in Canada. Economics major Ruhani Walia has already met representatives from both organizations. As a finalist in the Bank of Canada’s Undergraduate Student Paper Awards, the Victoria College student presented her research findings at the annual meeting of the CEA.

Ruhani submitted her paper Job Preservation Dynamics: A Comprehensive Study of Payment Protection Program Loan Efficacy, when she saw the call for submissions this spring. [Read more…]

Development economics, environmental economics, health economics and many other sub-fields demand an understanding of research-practice partnerships (RPPs). In applied economics research, RPPs generally embed academic researchers in community organizations as they design, implement, and deliver programs that have the potential to improve people’s lives. In this episode of the Finance Impact Podcast, Professor Raji Jayaraman, co-director of the Forward Society Lab housed here at the Department of Economics, explains the characteristics of RPPs, and how these partnerships are created and maintained.  The episode also discusses the role of quantitative data and rigorous evidence in policymaking.
