The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) has appointed three faculty members of the Department of Economics to research affiliation positions. The non-profit, non-partisan organization has appointed Associate Professor Joseph Steinberg to the position of Research Associate, an appointment reserved for tenured faculty. Assistant Professor Carolina Arteaga and Assistant Professor Ceren Baysan have been appointed Faculty Research Fellows, as faculty who are not yet tenured. NBER conducts and disseminated economics research in each category of the discipline.
Steinberg, who is best known for his investigations surrounding wealth tax, tax evasion, trade and tariffs has been appointed to the International Finance and Macroeconomics program. The group studies international financial interactions that include cross-border capital flows, exchange rates, and national responses to global financial crises.
“The NBER is the world’s leading economics research organization, and I’m honored to been elected as a Research Associate in its International Finance and Macroeconomics program,” Steinberg said. “Being a part of the NBER will help my work reach a broader audience and give me the opportunity to learn from the continent’s best economists. I’m grateful for the support of some good friends, especially my coauthors Kim Ruhl and George Alessandria, who advocated for me.”
Assistant Professor Baysan’s work encompasses applied microeconomics, political economy and development economics. She is best known for her research on how correcting misinformation can inspire citizens to demand democracy under authoritarian regimes. The organization has appointed her to both the Political Economy and the Development Economics programs.
“I am deeply grateful to my mentors, advisors, and the faculty who nominated me for the Political Economy and Development Economics programs,” Baysan said. “These fields have fascinated me since childhood, and I am always excited for more opportunities to connect with others who have similar interests and to improve and share my work. It is also a joy to share this opportunity with my colleague, Carolina Arteaga.”
Assistant Professor Arteaga is widely known for her research into how the opioid epidemic has contributed to the political environment in the US. More broadly, her research interests encompass health, political economy, education and crime. The NBER has appointed her to the Economics of Health program.
“I’m honored to join the NBER and to contribute to its research community,” she said.
The three new appointees join other NBER appointees in the department including Michael Baker, Shari Eli, Stephan Heblich, Marlene Koffi, Kory Kroft, Robert McMillan, Phillip Oreopoulos, Diego Restuccia, Daniel Trefler and Tianya Wang.
“The NBER is a prominent research organization and being associated with it is an important scholarly recognition,” said Professor Ettore Damiano, Chair of the Department of Economics. “We are all very proud that Carolina, Ceren and Joe have been appointed to work alongside colleagues across four different research programs.”
