International Day of Happiness Coming to Max Gluskin House

Be prepared to smile. The Front Desk of Happiness is coming to the Department of Economics. March 20th is the International Day of Happiness and Adriano Macedo, the events and office assistant with the department, has been studying the ups and downs of happiness and how to create it.  He recently earned a certification in the Science of Well-being.

“By embracing the principles of happiness and well-being,” Macedo believes, “we align ourselves with a global movement towards creating happier and more positive environments.” [Read more…]

2024 Celebration of Undergraduate Awards of Academic Excellence

What do the 2024 celebration of Undergraduate Awards of Academic Excellence in Economics and the Oscars have in common? Both award ceremonies were held the same month, and both recognized accomplishments from the year before.  Four days before the Oscars, on March 6, the Department of Economics took time to acknowledge some stellar performances of the 2022-23 academic year.

There was much for both undergraduate students, faculty, and undergraduate staff to celebrate.

“You have made the choice to fully engage with academics while you are here,” said Professor Robert Gazzale, Associate Chair of Undergraduate Programs, in his opening remarks. “There is something in every course, there is something in every class, that is new, exciting, and interesting.” [Read more…]

Runner Up in the Arthur Hosios Scholarship in Economics

Chloe Chayo‘s research paper for ECO475 was runner up for the Arthur Hosios Scholarship in Economics.  Applied Econometrics II continues from ECO375, but in this course the regression model is extended in several possible directions: time series analysis; panel data techniques; instrumental variables; simultaneous equations; limited dependent variables. Students complete a major empirical term paper, like Chayo’s below, that applies the tools of econometrics to a topic chosen by the student.

The essay not only exhibits a high standard of research rigour and excellent writing, but the choice of topic serves as an example of the immediate relevancy of economics research. Undergraduate students have the opportunity to examine the real world around them using the tools of econometrics. The Ontario Legislature passed the Pay Transparency Act six years ago. During the 2022-2023 academic year, Chayo examined its impact of the gender wage gap here in the province.

Winner of the Department of Economics Essay Prize in Economic Policy

An modified version of a paper Elissa Chrapko wrote for POL214 during the 2022-2023 won one of two Department of Economics Essay Prizes in Economic Policy. Awarded on 6 March, 2024, these special prizes are chosen from among the essays submitted for the Smith Family Scholarship in Economic Policy.

“I love economic policymaking, but writing satire has my heart,” confessed Chrapko. “I was raised an Albertan farm girl, so of course I’m obsessed with land and labour economics. ”

The Arthur Hosios Scholarship in Economics Winning Paper

Rose Zhang graduated from the Department of Economics, University of Toronto in June 2023. She is now an MSc student at the London School of Economics.ECO499, Honours Essay in Applied Microeconomics, is a course that enables students to complete an original research paper on a topic of their choosing. The topic must be microeconomic and applied, meaning all papers will involve data and quantitative (regression) analysis. Rose’s paper was awarded the Arthur Hosios Scholarship in Economics for best paper submitted during the 2023-2023 academic year on 6 March, 2024.

Established by the family and friends of the late Professor Arthur Hosios, the scholarship is held by one or more students on the basis of an original research paper that the applicant submitted as part of the requirements of a 300 or 400 level Economics course taken at the University of Toronto (St. George campus), for which the applicant received a credit. The applicants’ work is evaluated based on originality and presentation. There are two awards – one each for the winning and second best paper.
