The Department of Economics welcomes Assistant Professor Viktoriia Zezerova. She studied at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Saint Petersburg and in the PhD program in Economics at Pennsylvania State University. In her recent research, she combines structural modeling with rich microdata to uncover mechanisms behind trade policy effects in imperfectly competitive markets.
Viktoriia chose to come to UofT for its outstanding research community that holds considerable influence in her research fields of international economics, industrial organization, and applied microeconomics.
“As a PhD student, I was deeply inspired by many of the papers written by the department’s faculty members, so it feels very special to become a part of this community,” she said.
During the fall/winter semester, Professor Zezerova will be teaching ECO364, International Trade Theory, and ECO365, International Monetary Economics. Undergraduate students can expect references to current global events to illustrate course content.
“The global economy is complex and constantly evolving, which can make it difficult to grasp at first,” Viktoriia explained. “My goal is to help students make sense of this complexity by breaking it down into smaller, more manageable pieces. I aim to give them practical tools to analyze global economic issues and understand how different policies shape the world economy.”
Through her teaching style, Viktoriia hopes to help students develop important skills she acquired through her own educational journey.
“I hope to cultivate curiosity, independence in thinking, and confidence in working through complex problems,” she said. “I want students to feel comfortable asking questions, challenging ideas, and developing their own perspectives on global economic issues.”
