$4,395.79 is how much the Department of Economics team raised during The Run for the Cure. Students, staff and faculty members joined the Toronto event on the St. George campus on 5 October. Combined with similar events across Canada, the run raised more than $18 million to benefit Canadians affected by breast cancer through research and other programs funded by the Canadian Cancer Society.
“This year’s Run for Breast Cancer was our biggest and most heartwarming event yet! We had such an incredible turnout among students, faculty, staff. friends, colleagues, and families all came together early in the morning to run, raise funds, and show their support,” said team organizer and coach Professor Nazanin Khazra. “It felt extra special this year since the event took place right here on campus, and we were able to raise a remarkable amount of money for breast cancer research and awareness.”

The fastest runner this year was Professor of Economics Bob Gazzale. The New College principal ran the 5km course in under 24 minutes. Economics UTM Chair, Professor Ronald Wolthoff, and Professor Ettore Damiano, Chair of the Department of Economics, raced against each other, but spectators declined to comment on the final outcome of the contest.
Exceeding the team’s goal by almost 10% was due, to a large part, by undergraduate student Saya Alvares,

MA student Conal Donnelly and PhD student Lara Wulandari who were the top three fundraisers this year.
“It’s an incredible honor to raise funds for breast cancer research!” said Alvares, an economics major and New College student. “This topic is very important and personal to me as my best friend Sydney’s mom, Heather Prakash, who’s been a second mom since I met Syd in sixth grade, recently got diagnosed with breast cancer. I’m in awe of how strong she is every day and I run for her! Additionally, my mom’s best friend Angela passed away this year due to cancer, and I’m incredibly lucky to have known her in my life. I’m so grateful for the chance to run in CIBC Run for the Cure and am so glad to contribute to such an important cause!”
