Professor Emeritus Martin Osborne is the winner of the Sonnenschein Service Prize for his outstanding service to the economics profession. The award was established in 2024 and is bestowed by the Econometric Society, an international society dedicated to the advancement of economic theory in relation to statistics and mathematics.
“Martin Osborne has been a tireless advocate for economic theory and the economics profession more generally, has been generous in developing and disseminating research tools, and has always been eager to advise and assist anyone who asks,” the jury said in its announcement. “He was instrumental in creating the journal Theoretical Economics, subsequently adopted as one of the Econometric Society’s three journals.”
Winners of the award, which is named for the American economist and university administrator Hugo Sonnenschein, are selected by a committee chaired by the society’s president that consists of the chairs of its six regional standing committees.”
“Hugo Sonnenschein’s contributions to the field of economics — and way beyond — were huge,” said Professor Osborne. “It’s a great honour to win a prize with his name on it! Establishing Theoretical Economics was very much a collaborative effort, and I thank the many people whose contributions were instrumental in getting the journal off the ground and onto a trajectory towards its current prominent position as an outlet for research in economic theory.”
Upon completing his term as editor of the journal, Professor Osborne wrote a brief history of its foundation and transition to one of the Econometric Society’s flagship journals.
“It is wonderful to see Martin Osborne’s significant service to the discipline of economics recognized by the Econometric Society,” said Professor Ettore Damiano, Chair of the Department of Economics. “While Martin has always insisted that the collaborative nature of the journal’s foundation be recognized, his individual dedication remains remarkable. The entire department congratulates him on winning this well-deserved award.”
