Philip Oreopoulos’ University of Toronto Distinguished Professorship Award has been renewed for a second term. The distinguished professor program recognizes individuals with highly distinguished accomplishments who display exceptional promise, maintain an extraordinary level of activity in their research and scholarly work, and have achieved pre-eminence in their field. His full title, Distinguished Professor in Economics of Education Policy reflects Oreopoulos’ research focus on the use of computer assisted learning and tutoring to enhance the educational experiences of K12 students in local and international settings. His first appointment to the program took effect in July 2020.
“Anyone examining ways to improve learning and education outcomes knows how challenging this area of research can be,” Professor Oreopoulos said. “I’m extremely grateful to the university for supporting the flexibility and time needed for making progress to this area. I’m particularly excited about exploring ways to facilitate more personalized learning with the help of computer assisted learning and generative artificial intelligence technologies. The distinguished professorship will give me more opportunities to examine this avenue over the coming years.”
This renewal extends Oreopoulos’ distinguished professorship to June 30, 2030.
“All levels of students at both the St. George and UTM campuses benefit tremendously from access to Phil’s teaching and his research programs,” said Professor Ettore Damiano, Chair of the Department of Economics. “Members of the department are proud of his work to further understanding of tools that have the potential to improve education here in Ontario and around the world.”
