The Bank of Canada has awarded two Department of Economics professors its Fellowship Award. Professors Michelle Alexopoulos and Diego Restuccia are recognized for their expertise and research into the national bank’s core functions: monetary policy, financial systems, currency, fund management, and retail payments supervision. The award has an annual value of $95,000 for a five-year renewable term. Both professors also received the award in 2019.
“It is always an honour for the Department of Economics to see our faculty recognized for their outstanding achievements in research and their contributions to Economics and its institutions,” said Professor Ettore Damiano, Department Chair. “Both Michelle and Diego are deserving of this recognition from the Bank of Canada and we are all thrilled to have two more reasons to celebrate them and the continuation of their work.”
Professor Alexopoulos is current President of the Canadian Economics Association. where her term of service has emphasized equity and inclusion through mentoring and networking programs. Her research examines the effects of technological evolution and disruption on the economy and labour markets and, among other methodologies, includes the innovative use of library classification systems for data mining and text analysis. An modified version of a paper Elissa Chrapko wrote for POL214 during the 2022-2023 won one of two Department of Economics Essay Prizes in Economic Policy. Awarded on 6 March, 2024, these special prizes are chosen from among the essays submitted for the Smith Family Scholarship in Economic Policy.
“I love economic policymaking, but writing satire has my heart,” confessed Chrapko. “I was raised an Albertan farm girl, so of course I’m obsessed with land and labour economics. ”
This annotated list of influential Black African economists is not exhaustive in nature, but intended as a starting point for further inquiry. Supplied by Marlène Koffi, the list was annotated to support the article Black Economists of Influence in honour of Black History Month, 2024.

Teacher recruitment and retention is global issue. Around the world, the pool of teacher candidates has varying degrees of access to other jobs and other sources of income. In Sub-Saharan Africa, a series of mining booms is affecting who selects a teaching career, and how committed teachers are to their profession.
Poli Natama, a University of Toronto researcher, examined the teaching profession in the context of the booms that were prompted by increases in international mineral prices during the early 2000s. Artisanal mining, where individuals can mine independently on a small scale using their own resources, is a large feature of this economic phenomenon.
In the context of the new wealth and opportunity created by the mining booms, Natama asked two key questions: Does mining attract or repel qualified individuals into (or from) the teaching profession? And, how does mining affect the efforts that teachers put into their roles? [Read more…]
