EVENT Shockwaves in Global Trade: UofT Faculty on US Tariffs and Canada’s Future

Faculty, students, alumni, staff and members of the community are invited to join the Department of Economics for Shockwaves in Global Trade: UofT Faculty on US Tariffs and Canada’s Future.

This open conversation between economists and a political scientist from the University of Toronto will address the realities of US tariffs on world markets and global trade.

“This is such a global shock that, as UofT faculty, we need to take a role in discussing these events from our research specialties to increase public knowledge,” said event organizer Professor Jordi Mondria. “Topics of international trade and trade agreements are always our focus, these faculty members are always pushing the knowledge frontier, but we need to share these findings now.”

Carolyn Wilkins Delivers 2025 Berkowitz Lecture

Global finance leader Carolyn A. Wilkins delivered the 2025 Berkowitz Lecture on March 20th. Wilkins, a visiting senior research scholar at Princeton University’s Griswold Center for Economic Policy Studies delivered the lecture, What have we learned from Central Bank responses to COVID? The lecture referred to the first several months of the pandemic response during her term as a deputy governor at the Bank of Canada that ended in December 2020. Wilkins then went on to become an external member of the Financial Policy Committee of the Bank of England in June 2021. She is currently a visiting senior research scholar at Princeton University’s Griswold Center for Economic Policy Studies.

Wilkins’ analysis of lessons learned included re-visiting inflation forecasts and re-thinking trade offs between output and employment. She also emphasized the need to continuously scan for worrisome interactions between monetary policy and financial stability. Where the central bank was most influential, Wilkins suggested, was in raising the bar on the extraordinary use of monetary policy tools. Finally, she recognized that success does not solely rest on the actions of the central bank. [Read more…]

Emi Nakamura to Give 2024-25 Malim Harding Lecture

Professor Emi Nakamura will deliver the 2024-25 C. Malim Harding Visitorship Lecture in Political Economy.

The lecture, “Natural Experiments to Guide Macroeconomic Policy,” is scheduled for September 30, 2024 from 4 to 6 pm at the Campbell Conference Facility, 1 Devonshire Place. Registration to attend is via Event Brite.

The lecture recognizes that macroeconomic policy debates play a central role in public discourse and raises several key questions. How should central banks set interest rates? How much fiscal stimulus should governments use in large recessions? How do macroeconomists answer these questions? An emerging literature in macroeconomics tries to provide new answers to these questions using natural experiments and big data. [Read more…]

Bank of Canada Deputy Governor Toni Gravelle Visits MFE Program

Toni Gravelle, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada (BoC), took part in a fireside chat with students in the Master of Financial Economics program on July 9th. One of four Deputy Governors, Gravelle sits on the central bank’s Governing Council led by the Governor and Senior Deputy Governor. The six members of the council engage in every aspect of the country’s monetary policy, including setting interest rates. Deputy governors are appointed by the bank’s Governing Council at the recommendation of the Prime Minister and cabinet. Like deputy ministers and other senior civil servants, these highly trained and experienced individuals oversee operations and delivery of the ministerial services. Members of the governing council supervise, and are accountable, for ensuring the Bank of Canada fulfills its mandate. In his role, Gravelle leads the Financial Markets Department (FMD) and the Banking and Payments Department of the BoC. He is also one of two Deputy Governors who oversee the bank’s role in supporting a reliable financial system. Gravelle earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Western Ontario.
