The Economics Study Centre (ESC) is open for the 2025-26 university year! One of the most valuable resources available to new econ students, the ESC is housed in Economics’ HQ at Max Gluskin House, 150 St. George Street, Room 110. Even if you aren’t having issues with ECO101, 102 or 105, you are always welcome to drop in and talk about economics. The ESC is staffed by upper year Learning Assistants (LAs) who can remember exactly what it was like being a new student and the shocks that come with it!
When classes are running, the ESC is open Monday to Thursday for three sessions from 12 to 2, 2 to 4 and 4 to 6PM.

“The LAs in the ESC are here to answer course-related questions for all first- and second-year economics courses,” explained Head Learning Assistant Alex Hagyard. “Our goal is to provide a space where students can come and ask upper-year Learning Assistants questions in a supportive, inclusive, and stress-free environment.”
The Learning Assistants 2025-26
The choice to employee senior students as LAs is one that reflects the need for empathy and understanding when students aren’t just learning to work through the subject of economics for the first time but are also working through the massive life changes starting university naturally brings.
“To me, the ESC is a supportive community where students can explore different and effective ways to tackle economic questions and challenging concepts,” said Learning Assistant Lucy Wang. “It’s also a fun space—you get to meet people, share ideas, and start thinking more like an economist. Most importantly, it’s encouraging. Even when the material feels tough, you’re not alone here. The ESC gives you guidance and support now, while also helping you feel empowered to take on more challenges on your own (or come back when you need to) in the future.”
The ESC is a drop-in centre, so students do not need to book an appointment in advance. To create a safer environment for all, students sign up at the door when they arrive and wait until the LA calls their name. While you’re visiting the ESC, get to know the department space, rest in the lounge, find out about events and search out where your TAs and profs have their offices. You might not spend a lot of time in Max Gluskin House, but it is still the centre of the economics community here on the St. George campus.
